Non Executive Directors
Many Public Sector Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) are appointed through “interested parties”. Often there is confusion over where the demarcation between executive and non-executive activity should be. You need to be sure your NEDs put the interests of your organisation first – by keeping them fully involved and feeling that they are making a difference.
In the Private Sector, the role of a Non-Executive Director is often misunderstood and maybe as a result, under utilised. In the “Review of the Role and Effectiveness of Non-Executive Directors”, Sir Derek Higgins recommended that by ensuring sufficient emphasis on both the conformance and performance aspects of their role, Non-Executives can make a contribution
Whether in the public or private sector, the role of NEDs is legally the same but the extent to which Non-Executives are used in the public sector is significantly different to the private sector as is what is expected of them.
